At-will is the default
In Texas, employment is presumed at-will. That means either side can end the relationship at any time, with or without cause or notice.
The exceptions that matter
A termination is still unlawful when it is because of:
- Race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, age (40+) or genetic information
- Reporting illegal activity, filing a workers compensation claim, or serving on a jury
- Taking protected leave such as FMLA or military service
Deadlines
Discrimination charges generally must be filed with the Texas Workforce Commission Civil Rights Division or the EEOC within 180 or 300 days, depending on the claim. Missing that window usually ends the case.
